Chapter 8
In and Out
Girls and the Life
Sylmar Juvenile Hall was a far cry nicer than the rundown decrepit hostile and violent world of Central and Los Padrinos Juvenile Halls. And, to add to this, I was placed in Unit G-H a co-ed unit consisting of boys on one side and girls on the other--separated by only the staff’s office.
Most of our outdoor activities would be shared together, i.e. baseball, swimming, etc. We even went to school with the girls and shared the same day room for our visits. It was under these conditions that I met the most lovely little Tanya Hutchinson. Five feet tall, short, thick, light; truly just my type.
Tanya was originally from Inglewood, California, but she’d been living in Pacoima, a local valley area intensely populated by bloods. She’d grown up around Bloods and readily identified with them, but that made no difference with us. She and I passed long letters back and forth and claimed to have found a love. We snuck kisses when we could and promises to never let go and to rediscover each other out in the world.
Tanya had a real cute cousin named, Raina Maddox who was there, too. I liked Raina but Raina was just too young and naive for the enchanting beauty and body which she possessed. She came off as very loose and overly sexual as if she had no love or respect for self. I don’t even recall if they were codefendents on the same case or even what Tanya was in there for. It may have been shoplifting or some such nonsense but there was one thing that I did know: she and I would never part and we’d definitely be together once those doors opened.
At Sylmar, there was a staff member by the name of Mr. Guidance, whom we all fondly called, “Mr. G.” and he had a partner by the name of Mr. Walker who also worked there. Phi Beta Kappa, Walker represented it 100% and for me, a young guy from the ghetto streets, it was the first time I’d ever heard of a college fraternity. I’d never known anyone who’d actually attended college. Just seeing Walker wear his jacket and boast of his fraternity made me think of how much different life could be and how one could represent something ‘positive’ with the same pride and togetherness of the Hood. But, it was Mr. G. who had the greatest impact on me.
Mr. G. was almost like a father in the time and attention that he’d take to speak with us boys. He wasn’t the shouting ‘I said it so do it’ type that you often find in these sorts of situations. And he wasn’t so quick to ‘punish’ or strip privileges from a guy (or girl) simply because of a youthful ignorant action or mistake. He would sit the culprit down and talk to them, try to understand and work with you to get things done even if it took breaking a little
